Chocolate?

A possible way to get a horizontal groove or line into the knitting hit me yesterday afternoon and I grabbed some leftover yarn and knit up this sample. Does this look like a chocolate block pattern to you?

Okay, the blue is kind of off-putting. It would be more convincing in brown. I hope.

The way I get that groove at the top of each square is a little unorthodox, and definitely more suited to a Knitty.com audience than a Creative Knitting one.

I haven’t abandoned the cabled bon-bons idea. I reckon I might put them around the top of the ankle. If it doesn’t make the design too busy. We’ll see.

In other news, I’ve ordered some handpainted sock yarn from new online yarn shop I discovered, The Knittery. (Sorry Peeve, my fingers slipped on the keyboard and somehow hit the numbers that are on my visa card, miraculously in the right order. I promise I’ll give you another opportunity to join me in the next order.) This is the first Australian handpainted sock yarn source I’ve found. I’ve ordered the passionfruit and roses colorways.

  1. love both the colourways you bought. am resisting clicking and buying myself. but $4 postage!!!!!

  2. $4? Are you saying that’s too much or too little? The AussiePost site calculates the cost of postage at $3.80, not including the package, so it sounds very resonable to me.

There’s a new colourway there today. A chocolate colourway. All I did was enquire if she did colourway requests and mentioned my chocolate socks idea and, kapow! there it was.

Okay, I admit she did say she already had been thinking of doing a chocolate colourway.

  3. Oh! I had an idea about the chocolate socks! Why don’t you make the ‘chocolate squares’ parts out of raised purl stitches, with knit stitches between? If I=knit and -= purl, then…

I have no idea if it would actually work, but now I’m intrigued. I’m off to swatch and find out!

  4. Okay, I just went and tried it. It doesn’t work. (Damn!)
However, in my experimenting, I ran into a couple of things that might work (if I can just figure out how to do them properly!)

  5. Did anyone think my swatch looked okay? Or that it sucked? I can handle the truth. (Trust me, anyone who becomes a published writer can handle critisim!)

I’m going to try it in the round in a creamy white Patonyle. It’ll be a white chocolate sampler.

  6. I have no comment on the swatch and await the socks. I *did* see the chocolate colourway and its on my *need* list. I thought $4 for postage was good – its $7 US for me so I have to usually factor in an extra 10 bucks. But as I always thought, the US prices look good/right in Aussie but then you have to add 25%.
